Eagles Double Up Pioneers

Eagles Double Up Pioneers

The trio of Scott Logue, Blake Phelps, and Nick Cottone held Alfred State to just one hit as Elmira defeated the Pioneers on Thursday afternoon at Dunn Field.

The Pioneers got on the board in the 4th when Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) walked and scored on a wild pitch.

The Eagles answered right back in the bottom half of 4th with a RBI single by Matt van Muelken and Joey Florio drove home a run after a Pioneer fielding error. They added to their lead in the 5th when Eddie O'Donnell executed a squeeze bunt that scored Conor Bawiec to make it 3-1.

The Pioneers cut it to 3-2 in the 7th when Lucas Cornell (Alfred Almond) scored on a wild pitch. They threatened to tie the game in the same inning but stranded the bases loaded. Cameron Heggie drew a bases loaded walk in the 8th to add an insurance run for the Eagles.

Logue tossed five innings allowing one hit and one run while walking three and striking out four. Phelps tossed the next two innings without letting up a hit but allowing one run on four walks. Cottone retired all six batters he faced.

Thomas Shofi (Carmel) collected a doulble with one out in the 1st to account for the Pioneers lone hit. van Muelken led the Eagles with a 3 for 4 day.

The low scoring battle comes just nine days after the two teams combined for 35 runs, 24 hits, 25 walks, and eight errors in a 21-14 slugfest victory for Elmira.

The Pioneers play their final road games of the 2017 season on Sunday when they head to Williamsport, PA to take on Penn College. The first game of the doubleheader will be the resumption of a suspended game from March 11th. The Pioneers lead 5-1 in the 3rd inning.
