Buffalo State Wins Homecoming Battle

The Alfred State football team couldn't make enough big plays as Buffalo State defeated the Pioneers 27-0 in front of a large homecoming crowd at Pioneer Stadium.

The Pioneers battled the Bengals (4-2) tough all day but could never find the endzone. Early in the game Justin Bocchino (Hyde Park) interecepted a pass deep in his own zone and returned it 62 yards to put the Pioneers in scoring position but the blue & gold was unable to capitalize.

Marc Montana connected on a 30 yard field goal late in the 1st quarter to get Buff State on the board. Kyle Hoppy made it 10-0 with 8:02 remaining when he rushed in from three yards. The Bengals scored again with just 52 seconds remaining when Hoppy connected with Stephen Johnson on a 10-yard scoring pass.

In the 3rd quarter, Alfred State looked to be heading into score on a long pass play but Ish Height forced a fumble on the two yard line that resulted in a touchback. The Bengals added to their lead moments later on a nother Montana field goal (25 yards) and capped the scoring with 9:04 left when Tre Jones dove in from one-yard out.

Hoppy finished 20 for 35 for 224 yards while Jones rushed 24 times for 149 yards. The Bengals gained 463 yards, was 10 of 18 on 3rd downs, and collected 26 total first downs.

Dashon Turner (West Genesee) finished with 104 yards passing, Luke Nourse (Dolgeville) led the passing core with 66 yards on two catches, and Hezekiah Williamson (Albany) rushed for 40 yards. The Pioneers gained only 169 yards on the day and earned seven first downs.

Bart Mazzara led the Bengals with nine tackles while Billy Carroll recorded two sacks.

Steven Hubick (Fountain Hills, AZ) led the defense with 15 tackles while Brandon Davis (Lansing) finished with 10. Jhamel Cohen (Brooklyn/South Shore) had eight tackles and an interceptions and Ke'Shawn Pettway (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) recorded seven solo tackles.

The Pioneers have next week off but will play their final home game of the season on October 29th when they host Kentucky Wesleyan.
