Last Time Out:

  • Alfred State had last weekend off but in their last game they were tripped up 27-0 vs. Buffalo State. Steven Hubick led the defensive attack with 15 tackles while Ke'Shawn Pettway had seven solo tackles. Justin Bocchino and Jhamel Cohen both picked off passes in the game. Offensively, Dashon Turner passed for 104 yards with Luke Nourse leading the way with 66 yards receiving on two catches.
  • Kentucky Wesleyan fell 70-14 vs. Ashland University (ranked #11 in NCAA DII) last weekend at home. Mike McGee made the start at QB and was 16 for 23 for 292 yards. Both Travion Tucker (six catches for 125 yards) and Keelan Cole (three catches for 112 and a score) eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark. James Todd led the defense with five tackles but the defense struggled to stop Ashland. Ashland finished with 521 yards rushing and 737 total yards.

History between Teams:

  • The Pioneers and Panthers met for the first time last year. Keelan Cole had a big day with five catches for 145 yards and two scores. KW gained 515 total yards on the day and held the Pioneers to just 123. Khris Greggs had 103 all-purpose yards in the game while John Lauretti led the team with nine tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

Common Opponents:

  • The Pioneers and Panthers have no common opponents. Alfred State is an independent member of NCAA DIII while Kentucky Wesleyan is an independent member of NCAA DII. Alfred State joins the ECFC in 2017 while KW joins the GMAC.

Scouting the Pioneers:

  • In the final home game for a handful of Pioneers (Khris Greggs, Steven Hubick, Marshall Forbes, Trevon Smith, and Desmond Radcliffe) the team will need to make big plays like they were able to in their last outing. Versus Buffalo State, Alfred State had two interceptions and a 62-yard pass play but unfortunately none of the plays led to points.
  • Steven Hubick has 85 tackles on the season which sets a new NCAA era record. The previous record was 84 by Keegan Phalen (2013) and John Garbowski (2013).
  • The Panthers have struggled versus the run so we look for the Pioneers to get the running game started this week. Hezekiah Williamson is the teams leading rusher with 290 yards and two scores on 102 carries.
  • The Pioneers have scored 10 of their 13 trips this season in the red zone. Eight of those scores were touchdowns.

Scouting the Panthers:

  • Slowing down Kellan Cole will be key. Cole has 40 catches for 949 yards and nine touchdowns on the season. He also has over 600 yards and another score on special teams. Cole caught two scores in last years game vs. Alfred State.
  • The Kentucky Wesleyan defense struggled vs. the run last week and opponents are averaging over 270 yards on the ground a game. The defense has forced 13 turnovers (seven interceptions and six fumble recoveries) but only has seven sacks all year. Tyler Martin-Mills leads the team with 45 tackles.
  • Just like the Pioneers, the Panthers will need to improve on their 3rd down conversions. KW enters the game 38 for 124 on the season.
