Pioneers Finish Weekend with Two Wins

Alfred State grabbed their first two wins of the season as they hosted Lancaster Bible, who they beat 3-2, and Houghton University, who they beat 3-1.
In Game 1, the Pioneers lost their first set to Lancaster Bible 25-22, but took the next set 25-21. In the third set that led to extra points, the Chargers were able to take a 27-25 win, but Alfred State continued to battle back by taking a commanding 25-19 win in the fourth to force a 5-game set. Alfred State was able to secure the win with a 15-11 win.
Alfred State relied heavily on Racquel Gerstenberger who had 18 kills and 24 digs. Nayomie Ferrer Santiago continued to carry the Pioneers in assists, finishing in game 1 with 33 to go with her 11 digs. Alayna Tomlinson also added 9 kills and 13 digs to help the Pioneers take the win.
In Game 2, the Pioneers went on a quick run, winning the first two sets 25-22 and 25-14. The Highlanders, however, forced a game of 4 sets by taking the third with a 25-20 win. Alfred State and Houghton kept the atmosphere really exciting by going into extra points, with the Pioneers securing the win 29-27.
Gerstenberger had 19 kills and 12 digs to lead the Pioneers, while Tomlinson grabbed 14 kills and 7 digs. Ferrer Santiago assisted 28 times with 20 digs to add to the board.
The Pioneers will return to the court next Friday, September 8th against Westminster College in a tournament at Penn State Behrend.
