Pioneers Sweep Today's Doubleheader At Houghton

Houghton, NY- Pioneers swept the day to push their win streak to three and improve their record to 6-4. ASC took down Fredonia 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-11, 25-18), then followed with a 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-14) sweep over Houghton.

Racquel Gerstenberger led the way with a double-double, as she tallied 19 kills, 11 digs and three aces. Alayna Tomlinson added nine kills and eight digs. Nayomie Ferrer Santiago tallied 35 assists and six digs.

After the Blue Devils took the opening set, the Pioneers would answer with three straight set wins. Set two opened with a 7-2 run.  On that run Gerstenberger notched two kills, while Santiago added two aces. Later in the set ASC would go on a 9-2 run to take complete control of the set. Gerstenberger tallied three kills, while Erin Gregoire and Brianna Green added kills of their own. Alfred went on to take the set.

The Pioneers carried their momentum into set three as they opened the set on an 11-2 run. Alfred would go on to win the set to take the 2-1 set lead.

Set four saw multiple three and four point runs by the Pioneers. Late in the set Fredonia tried to rally but an error followed by a Tomlinson ace gave ASC set and match point. Gerstenberger ended the match with a kill.

vs Houghton

Gregoire led the way on offense in game two with 11 kills, while Gerstenberger added 10 kills and eight digs. Tomlinson tallied 10 digs and six digs, and Satiago notched 26 assists.

The first set started tightly contested until a 4-0 run by the Pios to take a 16-13 lead. Following a Houghton point, Tomlinson and Santiago notched kills for the 19-14 lead to force a timeout. Following the timeout, Caley Larsen notched an ace. A few plays later, Gregoire notched two kills for the 23-17 lead. A-State would go on and win the set.

In a back-and-forth second set, Alfred pulled out the win behind a Gerstenberger kill and aces. ASC carried the late momentum into the third and final set, as they started with an 8-2 run. On that run Santiago tallied two aces. A few plays later, following two Highlanders errors Gregoire notched a kill, and Emma Petrichick followed with three straight aces for the 14-6 lead. From there the Pioneers held on to win the set and the match.

ASC will be back on the road next weekend as they travel to SUNY Poly on Friday Sept 29th, before heading to SUNY Canton for a double header on Saturday.
