Pioneers Win Wild Battle vs. Carlow

Alfred State and Carlow University battled back and forth in a tight five set AMCC match. The match featured 30 tied scores and 11 lead changes in the 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 20-25, 15-12 victory for the Pioneers. ASC is now 9-6 on the season and 2-0 in AMCC play.

In the first set, Alayna Tomlinson registered six kills as ASC started off the match with the 25-20 win. The set featured four ties and two lead changes.

Raquel Gertsenberger recorded four kills while Erin Gregoire chipped in three kills in the 25-22 win that featrued six ties and four lead changes.

ASC started off fast in the 3rd set behind the solid serving by Nayomie Ferrer-Santiago but the Celtics rallied to take the set 21-15 to get right back in the match. Ferrer-Santiago had four service aces while Gregoire chipped in with three kills.

The 4th set featured eight ties and two lead changes as Carlow forced a deciding set with a 20-25 win. The Celtics got seven kills from Rebecca Hess while Gertsenberger had seven for ASC.

The 5th set was tight again with seven tied scores but the Pioneers were able to finish off the victory 15-12. Tomlinson was big with a set best four kills.

Gertsenberger led ASC with 17 kills and 12 digs while Tomlinson finished with 17 kills and 11 digs. Santiago-Ferrer passed out 37 assists, served seven aces and had ten digs. Gregoire added 11 kills, Kelsey Walker recorded five service aces, and Adeline Milligan led the team with 14 digs.

Hess led Carlow (7-9, 0-1 AMCC) with 19 kills while Meghan Alexander passed out 42 assists.

The Pioneers hit the road next week for a pair of AMCC contests. They travel to Penn State Behrend on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest with the Lions and then head to La Roche on Saturday for a Noon match.
