Pioneers Walk Off In Opener, Split with Hilbert

The Alfred State softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th to rally for a 4-3 victory in their opener of a doubleheader vs. Hilbert on Monday afternoon. The Hawks took the nightcap 16-2.

The Pioneers entered the 7th trailing 3-2. Annie Corrao (Grand Island) led off with a single and came around to score when Zoe Derr (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison) hit a triple over the left fielders head. Melissa Barber (Nassau/Catholic Central) hit a RBI groundout that plated Derr and gave the blue & gold the victory.

Alfred State grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 1st when Barber collected a RBI single and Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA) drew a bases loaded walk. The Hawks scored on a RBI groundout by Morgan McNeill in the 3rd, a RBI double by Gabrialle Bongiorno in the 5th, and grabbed the lead with a RBI single by Brittany Cooley in the 6th.

Derr finished the contest 3 for 4 while Corrao was 2 for 3. Trisha Shingleton (Byron Bergen) allowed four hits and two earned runs in the complete game victory. She walked five and struck out four.

Cooley was the lone Hawk with multiple hits finishing 2 for 3 with a RBI.

The Hawks scored in every inning, includuing a 8-run 3rd inning, the nightcap and eased to the victory. Rebecca Bailey was 3 for 4 with a RBI while Cooley was 2 for 3. Hilbert collected 10 hits and drew 13 walks in the contest.

Barber and Mosier both were 1 for 2 with a RBI for the Pioneers. Alfred State was held to just four hits by Victoria Dzaak in the contest.

The blue & gold are right back on the diamond again tomorrow when they entertain Geneseo in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
