Trio of Pioneers Advance to Quarterfinals
The Alfred State wrestling team sits in 9th place after day one of the NCWA National Championships. Bryan Mongiello (Washingtonville), Kevin Thayer (Unatego), and Codie Nichols (Unatego) have advanced to the quarterfinals.
Mongiello defeated Nick Johnson (Tenesee-Knoxville) 14-1 in his opening match in the 133 lb. bracket. He defeated Zachary Vatalare (Michigan) 5-0 and then pinned Ryan Hall (South Florida) in 4:16 to advance to the quarterfinals.
After a bye in the first round of the 149 lb. bracket, Thayer defeated Patrick Donnelly (Wayne State) 10-3 and then won 7-5 over Daniel Weiner (Florida Gulf Coast) in sudden victory to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the 157 lb. weight class, Nichols earned a 9-5 win over Robbie Thompson (Wayne State) after a first round bye. He then defeated Patrick Foxworth (Apprentice) 8-3 to move on to the quarters.
Six other Pioneers are still alive in the double elimination tournament. Tyler Aldinger (Alexander), Konnor Kremer (Horseheads), Josh Lord (Conner Fox (Midlakes), Josh Lord (Owego) were each 2-1 and have advanced to the 4th round of the consolation bracket. Austin Keough (Warsaw) and Dan Ognibene (Alexander) are both 1-1 and are still in contention.
