Kory Zimmer (Livonia) and Markus Ernest (Alfred Almond) scored 2nd half goals to lift the Alfred State men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Waynesburg in their home opener on Friday evening. The Pioneers are now 1-1 while the Yellowjackets are 0-2.
Waynesburg took a 1-0 lead 34 minutes into the game when Matt Porter slipped a goal into the back of the net after getting a long pass from Mitchell Meadville.
Zimmer scored at the 52:06 mark in the contest when he was able flick a shot off the side of his foot into the far corner of the net. Mike Leonardo (Ronkonkoma/Sachem East) set up the shot with a crossing pass.
Almost eight minutes later, the Pioneers took the lead with another pretty play. Nick Donner (Lancaster) sent a cross to the middle that found the foot of Ernest who sent a shot past the goalkeeper and into the corner of the net.
Waynesburg tried to tie the contest up late but Kenneth Allport (Hilton) preserved the victory by making a couple key plays in net. Allport finished the night with four saves to earn his first career victory in net.
The Pioneers held a 12-9 shot advantage in the contest.
The victory was the first for the blue & gold under new head coach Jonathan Hoover.
Alfred State returns to action tomorrow night when they battle Penn College at 7:30 p.m. at Pioneer Stadium.
