Rally Falls Short for Pioneers

The Alfred State men's soccer team scored two 2nd half goals but could not overcome a three goal halftime deficit in a 3-2 loss at Houghton on Tuesday.

Ben Lawrence scored in the 7th and 24th minute to give Houghton the early lead. Andrew Bussey made it 3-0 just under three minutes later.

The Pioneers were held without a shot in the 2nd half but turned it around with a strong 2nd half. Tyler Landries (Genesee Valley) got the blue & gold on the board in the 65th minute when he headed in a corner kick to record his fourth goal in the last two games. Michael Leondardo (Sachem East) set up the goal. Mitchell Porter (Alfred Almond) cut it to a one-goal game in the 81st minute after getting a pass from Kyle Jones (Wilson).

With just under three minutes left in the contest, Highlander goalkeeper Jacob Dunnett made a sliding save on a Pioneer breakaway opportunity to preserve the victory.

Houghton held a 23 to 5 shot advantage in the contest. Kenneth Allport (Hilton) made seven saves including five in the 2nd half for the Pioneers.

Alfred State is back at it on Friday when they head to SUNY Delhi for a 4 p.m. contest with the Broncos.
