Softball Drops Two Games in First Conference Weekend

The Alfred State Pioneers team opened conference play today against Pitt-Bradford, losing 11-1 in game 1 and 10-0 in game 2.

Game 1

After giving up two runs in the top of the first to the Panthers, the Pioneers scored early in the first inning, with Lauryn Engle singling to center field and bringing in Nicole Youngberg. However, the Panthers broke the score open in the second with five runs and leaving the Pioneers scoreless. They would go on to score four more runs in the third inning and taking the 11-1 lead before both teams went scoreless the next two innings. Youngberg, Engle, Audrey Farrell, and Kailey Wonica each had a hit for the team, with Engle also having one RBI. Farrell had four strike outs.

Game 2

The Panthers ran with the confidence from game 1 to hold off the Pioneers from scoring in the game 2. After giving up two runs in the first inning, Alfred State was able to defensively hold off Pitt-Bradford from scoring in the second and third inning. However, a big fourth of seven hits and seven runs gave the Panthers a 9-0 lead before adding one more run in the fifth to end the game. Farrell lead the Pios with two hits while Sarah Boyce, Faith Capito and Felecia Capito each added one hit.

The Pioneers will head to SUNY Delhi on Monday, April 10th to face off in a double-header at 2pm and 4pm.
