Softball Drops Doubleheader on the Road

The Alfred State Pioneers were on the road at Medaille this afternoon to face off in a non-conference double header. Alfred State lost 6-0 in game 1 and 10-2 in game 2 of the day.

Game 1:

Medaille got out to an early start against the Pioneers, holding Alfred State to no runs in the first inning and then scoring four runs in the bottom. Both teams played great infield defense in the second inning before Medaille put another score on the board in the third with a sacrifice fly out to center field by Komarnisk to bring Sommer in for the RBI. After two more scoreless innings, Medaille put one more run up in the sixth inning to secure the first win of the day.

Although Alfred State struggled to put points on the board, Audrey Farrell (Linwood), Lauryn Engle (Elba, NY), and Kailey Wonica (Staten Island, NY) all had hits. The Pioneers also held Medaille to only six hits total with Abby Beidel throwing 43 strikes in the game.

Game 2:

Alfred State were the first to score, with Engle doubling to right field to bring Nicole Youngberg (Falconer, NY) in for a RBI. However, Medaille ran with momentum in response, putting eight runs together to end the first inning. Alfred State responded in the third inning, after holding Medaille scoreless in the second, with Farrell line driving out to right field for a sacrifice fly to bring Jenna George in for the score. The Mavericks put up two more runs in the fifth inning to secure the win.

Faith Capito (Cuba, NY) and Youngberg each had two hits in the game with Jenna George (Dansville, NY) and Engle also adding one each.

Farrell was on the mound for game 2 and had four strike-outs and only allowed three earned runs.

Alfred State continues play on Saturday, April 15th as they face conference opponent, Pitt-Greensburg with game 1 set to start at 1:00pm and game 2 at 3:00pm.
