Pioneers Split with Redhawks

Pioneers Split with Redhawks

The Alfred State Softball team split with La Roche University today in a double-header conference matchup. Alfred State won the first game 7-6 and lost the second 6-1.

In Game 1:

A slow start to the game for both teams, La Roche opened scoring at the top of the third, but Alfred State quickly responded with four runs in the bottom to take the lead. The Pioneers continued the hot streak, adding three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, four runs to the open the sixth from the Hawks put pressure on the Pioneers, but two big plays by Kailey Wonica (Staten Island, NY) shut down any opportunity for the Hawks to tie up the game. Alfred State secured the 7-6 victory off great defense and a strong performance from Audrey Farrell (Linwood) on the mound who 148 pitches with 85 strikes. She struck out six batters and assisted on one of the winning outs in the seventh inning. Farrell, Faith Capito (Cuba, NY), Felecia Capito (Cuba, NY) all had two hits with Jenna George (Dansville, NY), Wonica, and Sarah Boyce (Cortland, NY) all adding one as well.

In Game 2:

La Roche came out hot to start the first inning, scoring three runs before scoring two more at the top of the third. Alfred State put a run on the board in the bottom of the third which would be the lone score of the game. La Roche put one more run up in the sixth to close the game 6-1. Farrell continued to lead the Pioneers with three hits on the day. Sarah Boyce chipped in two hits with Nicole Youngberg (Falconer, NY) , Lauryn Engle (Elba, NY), Felicia Capito, and Faith Capito each adding one hit. Abby Biedel (Newville, PA) threw 127 pitches and 80 strikes.

The Pioneers will face off in a single game against Houghton University on Tuesday, May 2nd in Houghton, NY. The game will begin at 5:00pm.
