Pioneers Win Two Games at Home

The Pioneers grabbed two non-conference wins over Keuka College today with a 10-6 victory in game 1 and a 3-1 victory in game 2.

Game 1

After quickly stopping Keuka from scoring in the top of the first inning, the Pioneers put two quick runs on the board. With bases loaded, Kailey Wonica (Staten Island, NY) brought Nicole Youngberg (Falconer, NY) in off a RBI. Wonica then got caught stealing, but brought Audrey Farrell (Linwood) in for a score. Both teams went scoreless in the second before Keuka put their first score of the day on the board off DeMoney singling to right and a Hill score. Alfred State then scored in the bottom, off a Farrell sacrifice fly, rounding Sarah Boyce (Cortland, NY)  in. Keuka responded in the fourth, but the Pioneers continued to secure the lead with two more runs. Alfred State was able to keep Keuka from getting on base in the fifth and Wonica became the difference maker in the bottom of the fifth, first doubling to bring Farrell in for a RBI and then scoring off a Felicia Capito (Cuba, NY) single. Both teams grabbed two runs each in the sixth before Keuka put two more on the board in the top of the seventh, but the Pioneers were able to keep the Wolves out of reach from the 10-6 victory.

On 10 hits, the Pioneers were able to score 10 runs with Farrell, Wonica, and Capito each assisting with two RBI and Lauryn Engle (Elba, NY) with one.

Game 2

In a game that started off very slowly offensively, the Pioneers played great defense to grab the 3-1 win. Three innings in, Alfred State was first on the board off a Farrell single to bring Boyce in for the RBI. Keuka responded in the top of the fifth, when Mohl singled to center field and Eagen came in for the score. However, the Pioneers were determined to keep their lead, breaking the tie off a Farrell single RBI to once again bring Boyce in and then Faith Capito (Cuba, NY) singling to right field for a Youngberg run. Both teams went scoreless in the sixth and Alfred State secured the win off a diving Wonica second out followed quickly by a Boyce leaping grab for the third.

Farrell threw 139 pitches, with 89 strikes and seven strike outs.

The Pioneers continue play on April 19th at conference opponent, Hilbert College, with game times at 3:00pm and 5:00pm.
