VanValen and Haggerty Finish 6th at Baldwin Wallace

George VanValen (Ithaca) and Brad Haggerty (Wellsville) both finished 6th in their weight class as Alfred State competed at the John Summa Invitational at Baldwin Wallace on Saturday. As a team the Pioneers finished 9th.

VanValen lost a tough 8-5 decision in his opening match of competition at 174 lbs. but battled his way back through the consolation bracket with four straight victories. He pinned Nathan Sisler, defeated Alex Bair (Ohio Northern) 7-2, defeated Kaegan Pearsall (Baldwin Wallace) 7-1, and won 8-0 over Max Dole (Ohio Northern) to advance to the consolation semifinals. In the consolation semis, VanValen lost a tight 2-0 decision and then fell 5-3 in sudden victory in the 5th place match.

Haggerty opened the day at 184 lbs. with a 10-5 victory over Will Amberger (Wabash) but fell into the consolation bracket after a 4-3 loss in the quarterfinals. He defeated Joshua Sneeringer (Waynesburg) 5-2 and defeated Amberger for the second time (pin in 6:33) to advance to the consolation semifinals. Haggerty fell in his final two matches to finish in 6th.

Konnor Kremer (Horseheads) earned two pins in consolation matches at 165 lbs. He pinned Matt Gwin (Ohio Northern) in 2:17 and Justin Hommer (Lycoming) in 4:26). He finished the day 2-2

The Pioneers head to Penn State next Sunday to compete in the USCAA Championships.
