Pioneers Downed in Double OT

Alfred State and SUNY ESF needed 50 minutes to decide the consolation game of the Sarah Lawrence Tournament.  At the final horn of the second OT, the Mighty Oaks withstood three last seconds shot attempts to win 96-95.

ESF used a 12-2 run in the 1st half to gain the lead and led 43-39 at half.  The Oaks led by 57-44 with 11:15 remaining before the Pioneers began a run that same them take the lead a 75-74 lead following a Dwight Holloman (Brooklyn/George Westinghouse) basket.  ESF hit a foul shot seconds later to tie it at 75-75.  Both teams had two shots in the final 1:18 but neither could score.

In the 1st OT, Alfred held a 85-80 lead with 1:50 remaining but the Oaks rallied and scored the final five points of the frame to send the game into a 2nd extra period.  Alfred State had the ball late but turned it over and ESF missed a shot in the final seconds.

The Mighty Oaks took a 96-92 lead with 1:30 remaining in the 2nd OT but would not score the rest of the way.  Marley Cherwin-Zangwill (New York/Global Learning) hit a three to cut it to 96-95 but the Pioneers missed three shots in the final 12 seconds that would have lifted them to the victory.

Tavon Moore (Syracuse/Bishop Grimes) came off the bench and led the Pioneers with 19 points. Rob Adams (Jasper Troupsburg) had a monster day with 15 points and 17 boards and Cherwin-Zangwill chipped in 13 points.  Adam Fezza (Southhampton) and Tommy Hutson (Brooklyn/Susan McKinney) both finsihed with 11 points.

The Pioneers shot 41.5% from the field and was 23 for 37 from the foul line.  They were slowed down by foul trouble.  The team committed 43 fouls which resulted in 72 foul shot attempts for ESF (45 for 72).  Five Pioneers fouled out of the contest.

Suthod Young led all scorers with 28 points for ESF along with grabbing 14 boards.  Kyle Peck finished with 18, Sage Beemer had 16, and Ryan Calddwell had 11.  The Oaks shot 34.8% from the field.

The blue & gold return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Wells College for a 7 p.m. tip-off with the Express.
