Buck and Amidon Lead Pioneer Past Canton

Aaron Buck (Churchville Chili) registered seven points and Ryan Amidon (Fayetteville Manlius) made 27 saves as Alfred State defeated SUNY Canton 10-7 on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead 7:27 into the game with two goals by Buck and goals by Teddy Alvarado (Hilton) and Dominic Arresta (Southhampton). Ryan Cardiff netted his first of four goals to cut the lead to 4-1 after the 1st quarter.

Buck found the back of the net twice to start the 2nd quarter to give the blue & gold a 6-1 lead. Cardiff netted a pair to cut it to 6-3 but Brian Mitchell (Lake Shore) and Alvarado scored in the final four minutes to send the Pioneers to half with a 8-3 lead.

In the 2nd half, Canton outscored Alfred State 4-2 but Amidon kept the Kangaroos from getting any closer by making 17 of his 27 saves in the 2nd half.

Buck finished with five goals and two assists while Alvarado recorded another hat trtick. Nathan Serio (Silver Creek) was credited with two assists while Arresta and Mitchell scored once. Devin Bronner (Cicero) had an assist.

Amidon made five saves in both the 1st and 2nd quarters, made nine saves in the 3rd, and made eight big saves in the 4th to secure the victory.

Cardiff led the Kangaroos with four goals and an assist while Steve Novak scored twice.

The blue & gold will look to build on the victory on Monday when they host Wells College. Opening faceoff is slated for 4 p.m. at Pioneer Stadium.
