Strong 2nd Half Leads Wells to Victory

Wells outscored Alfred State 9 to 4 in the 2nd half to earn a 11-8 victory at Pioneer Stadium on Monday afternoon. The Pioneers led 4-1 in the 2nd quarter before the Express offense got moving.

Dominic Arresta (Southhampton) got the Pioneers on the board to start the game after getting a pass from Teddy Alvarado (Hilton). Brian Mitchell (Lake Shore) made it 2-0 after the 1st quarter when he scored with 1:41 remaining after getting a pass from Joe Wittmeyer (Hamburg).

Alvardo and Patrick Matkoski (West Genesee) scored in the 2nd as the teams traded goals. The Pioneers held a 4-2 lead at half.

Alvarado scored eight seconds into the 3rd quarter after getting a pass from Mitchell but the Express scored the next four goals to grab their first lead. Alvarado tied it up with 12 seconds remaining in the quarter but Tanner Mingen scored with just three seconds remaining to give Wells back the lead.

Wells outscored Alfred 4-2 in the 4th quarter and kept the Pioneers from getting closer than three goals. Matkoski and Arresta found the back of the net for the blue & gold in the 4th.

Alvarado finished with three goals and two assists, Matkoski had two goals and an assist, and Arresta scored twice. Mitchell registered a goal and an assist and Wittmeyer had one assist. Ryan Amidon (Fayetteville Manlius) made 15 saves.

Alex Milliken led Wells with four goals and four assists while Connor Jansen had two goals and an assist. Aaron Heisey and Tanner Mingen each scored twice. Tyler Bischoff made seven saves to earn the victory.

The Pioneers are back at it on Wednesday when they travel to Niagara CC for a 4 p.m. opening faceoff.
