Buck Leads Pioneers Past Houghton in Wild Contest

Aaron Buck (Churchville Chili) scored with 21 seconds remaining in the contest to lift Alfred State to a come-from-behind 18-17 victory at Houghton on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers have now won three of their last four games.

Houghton led 17-15 with just over two minutes remaining when the Pioneers made their comeback. Dominic Arresta (Southhampton) scored twice to tie the contest and then Buck netted his 10th goal with 21 seconds remaining to give the Pioneers their first lead since 3-2. Devin Bronner (Cicero) picked up the assist on the winning goal.

Buck scored a career high 10 goals and passed out three asissts. He scored two in the 1st, two in the 2nd, three in the 3rd, and three in the 4th. Buck, who missed the last two contests, now has 33 goals on the year.

Arresta finished the day with four goals and an assist, Teddy Alvarado (Hilton) netted two goals, while Patrick Matkoski (West Genesee) and Bronner each had a goal and an assist. Joe Wittmeyer (Hamburg) picked up one assist.

Paul Chapman led Houghton with nine goals and two assists while Sean Daigler found the back of the net four times.

The contest was tied at 6-6 after one, Houghton led 11-8 at halftime, and 15-13 after three. The Pioneers outscored the Highlanders 5-2 in the 4th. Alfred State outshot Houghton 64 to 35 in the game.

The blue & gold are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Keuka for a 4 p.m. contest.
