Pioneers Comeback Falls Short

Pioneers Comeback Falls Short

The Alfred State Women's Basketball team fell in a pivotal road game against Hilbert 50-40. A comeback effort from the beginning fell just short for the Pioneers.

The game started with an 8-2 run for Hilbert. The six-point advantage stayed with the Hawks the rest of the quarter, heading into the first break up 12-6. Alfred State cut the lead to two points by halftime, outscoring Hilbert 15-11 in quarter two. Heading into the third quarter down two 23-21, the Pioneers continued to mount their comeback. Alfred State stayed within striking distance going into the fourth quarter down 34-31. The game stayed within five points throughout the fourth, getting as close as three points, 43-40, with 2 minutes remaining. Two straight jumpers for Hilbert and made free throws put the game out of reach.

Some standouts for the Pioneers include:

Faith McCombs (Amityville, NY / Copaigue): McCombs just missed another double-double. She tallied a team-high 11 points and 9 rebounds. McCombs went 5-6 from the field and made her presence felt on defense with 3 blocks.

Taylor Benjamin (Newark Valley, NY / Newark Valley): Benjamin had 11 points, 3 assists and 7 boards. She also tallied 3 steals, contributing on the defensive end that held Hilbert to a 30.6% shooting night.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, February 11 at 3 p.m. They head to Mt. Aloysius for a conference battle.
