Frascella, Laurie & Lohr Honored with Pioneer Legacy Awards

Kate Frascella (Franklinville), Josh Laurie (LeRoy), and Ryan Lohr (West Seneca) have been named the recipients of the 2020-21 Pioneer Legacy Awards. This award is given to the male and female athletes who have achieved success on and off the field throughout their career at Alfred State. The nominees have demonstrated sportsmanship and leadership, been involved in civic engagement activities, along with earning athletic honors during their career.

Frascella has been involved in numerous community service and campus activities, as well as many leadership positions throughout her tenure at Alfred State. Once the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Frascella began working full-time on the front lines as a nurse. She developed COVID-19 from an exposure at work, and was subsequently unable to return to track as an athlete. She then served as a student assistant coach for the men's and women's track and field teams in 2021. During her senior year in college as a full-time student and assistant track coach, she also worked as a full-time Registered Nurse at Olean General Hospital and part-time as a Registered Nurse for Alfred State Health and Wellness.

Throughout her four years as a Pioneer, Frascella also participated in numerous other leadership and service positions, such as SUNY's Got Your Back Backpack Drive, Yards for Yeardly, Dr. Seuss Reading Week, Special Olympics, Hope for Health Club Member, Community Give Back Day. She served as the team captain for the women's cross country and track programs, and was a representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Additionally, Frascella earned countless academic honors for her high achievement in the Nursing field. She earned the AMCC Woman of the Year honor recently, has been SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence, and the Paul B. Orvis Award for Student Excellence at ASC. She was also a member of Chi Alpha Sigma (the national honor society for collegiate athletes), Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and the National Society for Leadership and Success, to name a few.

Athletically, Frascella was a member of the 2017 ACAA Cross Country Championship team.

Laurie, a four-year member of the baseball team, has been an active member of SAAC and served as one of the two Alfred State representatives to the AMCC. He has served as a captain and was counted on by his coaching staff to lead on and off the field. Laurie was key in helping with baseball fundraising, helping with recruiting events, and all of the community service efforts of the program.

On the baseball diamond, he appeared in 128 games and helped Alfred State to two AMCC postseason appearances. He had 122 career hits (21 doubles, seven triples, and seven homers) and 64 RBI. He was a career .268 hitter and was named 1st team All-AMCC in 2019.

Laurie, a business administration graduate, has been honored for his work in the classroom by being named to the AMCC All-Academic Team multiple times and is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, the student-athlete honor society.

Laurie is currently playing for the Alpine Cowboys in the Pecos League (independent professional baseball) and he is planning on returning to Alfred to pursue a MBA from Alfred University and serve as an assistant baseball coach at Alfred State.

Lohr has served as the president of the Alfred State Student Athlete Advisory Committee the past two years and have been an active member of the group during his four years on campus. He was integral part of the planning and execution of all SAAC events the past year including Special Olympics, Yards for Yeardley, and Dr. Seuss Reading Week to name a few.

He was a member of the cross country and track & field programs during each of his four years. This past season he finished 4th at the AMCC Championships. He finished the 5k course in 19:12.84.

Academically, Lohr (Mechanical Engineering Technology) has been honored for his work in the classroom by being named to the All-Academic team by the AMCC and the CSAC. He has also been inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma.

All three recipients will receive a trophy to commemorate the accomplishment.
