Pioneers Fall at Fisher

The Alfred State baseball team collected just three hits as they fell to St. John Fisher 10-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 4-0 on the year while the Pioneers are now 1-2 in the first week of the season.

The game was scoreless until the 3rd when St. John Fisher plated five runs on five hits to take the lead for good. They added a single run in the 4th and plated two runs in each in the 5th and 6th to extend the lead to 10-0.

Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) collected the lone extra base hit for the blue & gold, hitting a double in the 4th. Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) and Jack Henby (Hornell) each collected a single.

Christopher Mattoon (Elmira) was the most effective pitcher as he tossed two scoreless innings of relief. He walked one and struck out two.

James Murphy was one of four Cardinals with two hits finishing 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Justin Graham collected a pair of doubles and finished 2 for 4 with three runs scored. Five pitchers combined to throw the three hitter. They walked two batters and struck out nine.

Pioneers have a pair of doubleheaders scheduled this weekend. They travel down the road to Houghton on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader vs. the Highlanders and then head back to Cortland for a make-up doubleheader with the Red Dragons on Sunday starting at Noon.
