Pioneers Season Comes to an End in AMCC Semifinals

The Alfred State baseball team saw their season come to an end in the AMCC Semifinals on Friday afternoon. #1 La Roche earned a 14-1 victory in the opener of the best of three series and then rallied for a 8-7 walk-off victory in game two.

The Redhawks used three big innings to take control of the opener. They jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st and then scored four in the 2nd and three more in the 3rd to take a 8-0. Leading 9-0, they added five more in the 6th to put the game out of reach.

The Pioneers were held to just two hits in the game. Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) hit a solo homer in the 4th to account for the lone run for the blue & gold.

In the nightcap, La Roche jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st but Alfred State tied it the 2nd when Josh Laurie (LeRoy) hit a RBI single to right center. The Pioneers took their first lead of the day in the 3rd when Tim Holler (Brewster) scored on a wild pitch and Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) hit a RBI groundout to short.

The Redhawks scored a run in the 4th to make it a one-run game. Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) hit a RBI single to left in the 7th and Laurie collected another RBI single in the 7th to make it 5-2.

LaRoche tied the game with three runs in the 7th and took the lead with a pair of runs in the 8th to make it 7-5.

In the top of the 9th, Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) singled and Justin LoTemple (Greece Athena) drew a walk to set up Laurie. Laurie delivered with a RBI single and pinch runner Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer) came all the way around to score after a fielding error to tie the game up. Laurie ended up at 3rd but was stranded there.

In the bottom of the 9th, a pair of walks and a pair of wild pitches led to Dylan Urban hitting fly ball to right that allowed Jay Novak to score the game-winning run.

Laurie led the Pioneer 12-hit attack with a 3 for 5, 3 RBI day. Burdett was 2 for 4, Avallone was 2 for 5 with a RBI, and Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) was 2 for 5.
