Pioneers and Greensburg Split on Friday

Alfred State split a high-scoring doubleheader at Pitt-Greensburg on Friday afternoon. The Pioneers won the opener 16-10 but saw the Bobcats rally for a 11-6 victory in the nightcap.

The Pioneers got on the board in the 1st when the first three batters of the game scored. Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) doubled home Tim Holler (Brewster) and Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) followed with a two-run homer to left.

The Bobcats scored four in the 2nd to take a 4-3 lead. Nick Serce (Irondeqouit) hit a two-RBI single in the single in the 3rd and Dickerson hit a RBI single to center in the 4th to make it 6-4. Greensburg scored three in the 4th to retake the lead. Mike Gibson (Schenectady) tied it in the 5th with a RBI bunt single.

A two-run double in the 5th gave UPG their final lead of the game but a big the Pioneers answered with a huge 6th inning. Serce drew a bases loaded walk to tie it and Josh Laurie (LeRoy) followed with a first pitch grand slam to right field. Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) followed with a RBI groundout to make it 13-8.

They added three more insurance runs in the 7th. Laurie collected a 2-RBI single to left center and Lansing added a RBI single through the left side. Greensburg plated two in the bottom of the inning but didn't get any closer.

Dickerson finished 3 for 5 with 2 RBI while Laurie was 2 for 4 with 6 RBI. Eight Pioneers finished with multiple hits and five had multiple RBI. 

Chris Baldwin (Patchogue- Medford) earned the win on the mound. He allowed two runs on four hits in 2.2 innings of relief.

Burdett gave the Pioneers the lead in the 1st in the nightcap when he doubled to left center to score Tim Holler. Greensburg scored the next five runs with three in the 2nd, one in the 4th, and one in the 5th.

Trailing 5-1 heading into the 6th, the Pioneers rallied. Jack Henby (Hornell) and Amaury Samalot (Churchville Chili) hit back to back RBI doubles and Ryan Santiago (Staten Island/HS of Telecommunications) followed with a RBI single to left center. Serce tied it in the 7th with a RBI single to right and Laurie gave the Pioneers a 7-6 advantage with a sac fly to center.

Greensburg took back the lead in the 7th with three runs and a three-run homer in the 8th added to their lead.

Holler finished 3 for 5 to lead the Alfred State offense. Henby and Samalot were each 2 for 4 with a RBI while Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) was 2 for 5.

The Pioneers play their final AMCC doubleheader on Sunday when they host Hilbert. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
