Avallone Collects Four Hits at Cortland

Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) was 4 for 7 on the day as the Alfred State baseball team battled Cortland on Sunday. The Red Dragons took both ends of a doubleheader, 6-2 and 8-1, to even their record at 2-2.

Nick Serce (Irondequoit) got the Pioneers in the board in the 1st when he hit a RBI double to center and then came around to score on a RBI single to left by Justin LoTemple (Greece Athena) to make it 2-0.

Cortland scored a single run in the 2nd and tied it with another run in the 3rd. A Scott Giordano homer to right in the 5th gave the Red Dragons the lead for good. They added another run in the 5th and single runs in the 6th and 8th inning.

The Pioneers had their chances as they collected 10 hits and drew three walks but stranded nine runners on base.

LoTemple was 3 for 4 with a RBI while Ryan Santiago (Staten Island/HS of Telecomunications) was 2 for 3. Avallone was 2 for 4.

In the nightcap, Cortland collected 14 hits and led throughout. They scored three in the 3rd, one in the 3rd, two in the 7th and two more in the 8th. The Pioneers lone run came in the 8th when Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) hit a RBI double to left center to score Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalpin-Perth).

Avallone accounted for two of the Pioneers six hits in the game finishing 2 for 3. Josh Laurie also finished with a pair of hits finishing 2 for 4.

The Pioneers head back to the Kerr Pegula Athletic Complex tomorrow for a 5 p.m. contest (one 9-inning game) vs. Houghton.
