Pioneers Continue to Roll - Sweep Medaille

The Alfred State baseball team improved to 6-0 in AMCC play and evened up their overall record at 11-11 with a sweep of Medaille on Tuesday afternoon. 

In the opener, Medaille got on the board first with a run in the 1st but the Pioneers scored the next six runs in the game. Mike Gibson (Schenectady) hit a sac fly to tie it in the 2nd. In the 3rd, Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) hit a RBI double to left and Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) followed with a sac fly to left field. In the 4th, Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) collectd a RBI double, Josh Laurie (LeRoy) hit a sac fly to center, and Avallone made it 6-1 with a solo homer.

The Mavericks cut it to 6-2 in the 4th but Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) answered right back with a RBI single to left in the 5th and Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) hit a sac fly to right to make it 8-2. Medaille scored their final run in the 6th and Burdett hit the Pioneers fifth sac fly to cap the scoring.

Gibson was 2 for 3 with a RBI, Jack Henby (Hornell) was 2 for 3, and Avallone was 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI. Christopher Mattoon (Elmria) went the distance on the mound. He allowed three runs on 10 hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out eight.

The Pioneers scored 14 runs on 11 hits (six for extra bases) and drew 14 walks in game two. 

In the 1st, Avallone drew a bases loaded walk, Tim Holler (Brewster) scored on a double play, and Pingitore made it 3-0 with a RBI double. Laurie added to the lead in the 2nd when he tripled home Holler and Burdett. Avallone hit a two-run double to right in the 4th and Burdett hit a two-run double to left in the 5th to make it 9-0

The Pioneers scored five more in the 6th to put the game out reach. Henby hit a RBI double to left, Pingitore scored on a wild pitch, Henby scored on a passed ball, Burdett doubled to center to drive in two, and Holler hit a sac fly.

Medaille scored their lone runs of the game in the 6th and neither team scored in the final three innings.

Burdett wsa 2 for 3 with 4 RBI in game two while Serce was 2 for 4. Lewis Pettit (Bolivar Richburg) earned the win on the mound with six innings of work. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out three. The bullpen of James Carman (Wayland Cohocton), Bobby Sellers (Rush Henrietta), and Ryan Demitrovic (Churchville) combined to throw three scoreless innings of relief.

The Pioneers have added a game tomorrow (4/14) afternoon. They will travel to St. John Fisher for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
