Pioneers Sweep Panthers - Stay Unbeaten in AMCC Play

The Alfred State baseball team took both ends of a AMCC doubleheader vs. Pitt Bradford on Saturday. They won the opener 4-1 and the nightcap 13-8 to improve to 9-11 overall and 4-0 in AMCC play.

Mike Gibson (Schenectady) hit a sac fly to center to score Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) to open the scoring in the 2nd. In the 4th, Gibson made it 2-0 when he hit a RBI fielder's choice. Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) followed with a RBI single to left and Tim Holler (Brewster) followed with a perfect squeeze bunt to score Gibson.

AJ Gartland (Irondequoit) made those runs stand as he threw 5.2 innings of shutout ball. He allowed four hits and four walks but struck out seven. Connor Hong (Gates Chili) got three outs and allowed a 7th inning run before Christopher Mattoon (Elmira) got the final out with bases loaded to earn his third save.

Jack Henby (Hornell) was 3 for 3 while Burdett was 2 for 2 with a RBI. Josh Laurie (LeRoy) was 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles.

The nightcap featured 21 runs and 24 hits. 

Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) got the blue & gold on the board in the 1st when he laced a single up the middle to score Burdett. The Panthers took their only lead of the day with a four run 3rd inning but the Pioneers answered with three runs in the 4th to tie it and three more in the 5th to take the lead back for good. In the 4th, Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) hit a RBI double down the left field line, Burdett collected a RBI single up the middle, and Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) hit a RBI double to left. In the 5th, Henby scored on a wild pitch and Gibson collected a pair of RBI when he hit a single down the right field line to make it 7-4.

Bradford scored a pair in the top of the 6th before Laurie scored on a wild pitch in the 6th to make it 8-6. The Panthers cut it to within one again in the 7th but the Pioneers put the game out of reach with four runs in the bottom of the 7th. Brudett collected another RBI single, Dickerson hit a sac fly to left, and Avallone drove in two with a single to left. Jesse Kabat (Seneca Falls/Mynderse) added an insurance runs with a RBI single to left to make it 13-7 heading into the final frame. UPB plated an unearned run in the 9th but couldn't mount a rally.

Burdett was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and finished the day 5-6. Kabat was 2 for 4 with a RBI and Avallone was 2 for 5 with 3 RBI. Chris Caitore (Brooklyn/Fort Hamilton) earned the win with 5.1 innings of work. He allowed nine hits and six earned runs while walking one and striking out six. Nick Serce (Irondequoit) threw 2.1 innings of relieft allowing just one earned run and Chris Baldwin (Patchogue/Patchogue-Medford) pitched the final 1.1 innings allowing just an unearned run to end the game. 

Alfred State continues AMCC play on Tuesday when they head to Buffalo to take on Medaille in a 1 p.m. doubleheaders.
