Pioneers Connect on Three Homers but fall at Houghton

Alfred State connected on three homers but were unable to pick up a victory in a doubleheader at Houghton on Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders improved to 6-0 on the year with 2-1 and 11-8 victories.

Jon White (Clarence) and Hunter Kendall squared off in a pitchers duel in the opener. White allowed just four hits while Kendall allowed three.

The Highlanders scored on a sac fly in the 3rd to open the scoring. The game remained 1-0 until the 6th when Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) connected on a solo homer to left to tie it. In the bottom of the 6th, Houghton scored the game-winner on a two-out RBI single by Zach Parr. The Pioneers put two runners on in the 7th but could not plate the tying run. The blue & gold stranded eight in the contest.

Burdett, Jack Curabba (Shohola, PA), and Gavin Moore (Hilton) collected hits for the Pioneers.

White threw six innings and allowed four hits and two runs while walking three and striking out four. Kendall (2-0) threw a complete game three-hitter with four walks and eight strikeouts.

The Pioneers jumped out to a lead in the 1st inning of the night cap when Justin LoTemple (Greece Athena) connected on a three-run homer to left center. Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) made it 4-0 when he scored on an error in the 2nd and Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) made it 5-0 when hit a solo homer to right in the 3rd.

Houghton cut the lead to 5-1 in the 3rd but LoTemple answered with a RBI single to left to make it 6-1 in the 4th.

The Highlanders began their comeback in the 4th with a single run and then tied the game with four runs in the 5th. They took the lead in the 6th by scoring an unearned run but Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalpin-Perth) tied it in the 7th when he scored on a passed ball.

In the 7th, Houghton scored on a passed ball and an error to take the lead 9-7. A two-run double in the 8th made it 11-7. Lansing scored in the 9th on a wild pitch and the tying run was in the on deck circle when the game ended.

LoTemple was the only Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 5 with 4 RBI. The Pioneers collected seven hits, six walks, and were hit by three pitches but stranded 12 batters on base.

The Pioneers head to SUNY Cortland tomorrow for a Noon doubleheader vs. the Red Dragons. The game is a make-up from last week's postponed game.
