Strong Bench Play Not Enough in Home Opener

A strong performance from the Alfred State men's basketball bench wasn't enough as Keuka used a big run en route to a 74-54 victory in the Pioneers home opener. The Wolfpack improve to 2-1 while the Pioneers are 0-3 on the young season.

With four minutes remaining in the 1st half, Alfred State trailed 22-21 but Keuka ended the half on a 13 to 4 run to hold a 35-25 halftime lead. The Wolfpack continued their solid play to start the 2nd half and extended their lead to 49-28 with a 14 to 3 run in the first five minutes to expand their lead.

Justin Wallace (Mount Vernon/Mt. St. Michael) led the Pioneers with 13 points on 5 for 7 shooting, including 3 for 5 from three. Tommy Hutson (Brooklyn/Susan McKinney) added nine, Charles Ingram (Harlem/Seward Park) had seven, and Dan Gormley (Massapequa/St. Anthony's) chipped in six.

The Pioneers shot 39.1% from the field, 30.4% (7 of 23) from three, and struggled from the foul line (11 for 23). Alfred State was outrebounded 39 to 24 in the contest.

Casey Williams had an all around solid game finishing with 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Jared Wagner finished with a game-high 14 points while Adam Starks came off the bench and had 11.

Keuka shot 51.9% from field, 47.6% (10 for 21) from three, and was 10 for 16 from the foul line.

Alfred State heads to the RIT Tournament on Friday where they will face Maritime in their opening round at 6 p.m.
