Pioneers Chop Down Mighty Oaks

The Alfred State men's basketball team outscored SUNY ESF 37-23 in the 2nd half to close out the 2014 portion of their season with a 69-55 victory. Four Pioneers finished in double figures in the victory.

The Pioneers raced out to a 17-2 lead to start the game but the Mighty Oaks answered with a 22-5 run to grab the lead. The teams ened up knotted at 32-32 at the break. In the 2nd half, Alfred State took control by shooting 44.8% and holding SUNY ESF to just 25.8% shooting.

Tommy Hutson (Brooklyn/Susan McKinney) led a Pioneer quartet in double figures with 14 points. Tyler Elliott (Perry) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 18 rebounds (11 defensive boards), Justin Wallace (Mount Vernon) added 11, and Jared Bard (Jordan Elbridge) came off the bench and chipped in 10. Adam Fezza (Southhampton) added nine points.

Ryan Caldwell and Suthod Young came off the bench and led the Mighty Oaks with 12 points each. Matt Kowalski added eight and Saige Beemer chipped in seven.

Alfred State shot 44.4% from the field, was 5 for 20 from three, and hit 64% of their foul shots. ESF shot 32.7% from the field, 3 for 8 from three (0 for 3 in the 2nd half), and 53.3% (16 for 30) from the foul line. The Pioneers held a 46 to 34 rebounding advantage in the contest.

The Pioneers return to action on January 10th when they travel to take on NCAA DI Cornell.
