Last Second Basket Lifts Oberlin

Last Second Basket Lifts Oberlin

Jack Poyle banked home the game winning shot with 1.6 seconds remaining to lift Oberlin to a 70-68 victory over Alfred State on Sunday afternoon.

Oberlin led for most of the contest and led by as many as 10 points in the contest. The Pioneers chipped away in the 2nd half to tie on a Marquis Edwards (Queens/In-Tech Academy) foul shot with just over three minutes remaining. Both teams struggled offensively down the stretch, Nathan Cohen gave the Yeomen the lead with 2:09 remaining and Wade Franklin (Arkport) hit two foul shots with 32 seconds left to tie it back up.

After a timeout by both teams, Oberlin held the ball to run down the clock. With the shot clock and game clocking ticking away, Poyle drove to the hoop and was able to bank home the game winner. The Pioneers tried a desperation shot at the buzzer but did not get it off before the final horn.

Edwards and Tyrone Davis (Brooklyn/Benjamin Banneker) each finished with 14 to lead the Pioneers. Davis also passed out six assists, grabbed five boards, and was credited with five steals. Dondre Davis came off the bench and chipped in seven of the bench's 24 points.

The Pioneers shot 42.3% from the field, hit 50% (6 of 12) from three, and connected on 18 of 23 (78.3%) foul shots. 26 turnovers slowed down the blue & gold.

Poyle led the Yeomen with 21 points while Eli Silverman-Lloyd chipped in 17. Joshua Friedkin added 13 for Oberlin.

The Pioneers are back in action next Sunday when they host Penn College at 3 p.m.
