Pioneers Silence the Sound
The Alfred State men's basketball team continued their hot play as of late with a 90-81 victory over Five Towns College on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers have won six of their last eight contests.
After a back and forth start the Pioneers tied game at 15-15 with 12:07 remaining in the 1st half and then led 42-35 at halftime. The Sound kept it close and tied the game at 50-50 with 13:26 remaining before the Pioneers took over for good with a 13 to 4 run. The Pioneers led by as many as 14, 81-67, as they finished up the victory.
Marquis Edwards (Queens/In-Tech Academy) led five Pioneers in double figures. He scored 19 of his team high 21 points in the 2nd half. He connected on four of the team's seven 3-pointers.
Tyler Elliott (Perry) and Tyrone Davis (Brooklyn/Benjamin Banneker) both recorded a double-doubles. Elliott had 16 points and 12 rebounds while Davis had 13 points and 11 assists. Justin Wallace (Mt. Vernon/Mt. St. Michael) added 13 points while Dante Jordan (New York/Law & Public Service) chipped in 10.
The Pioneers shot 35.4% from the field, 38.9% from three, and 64.1% from the foul line. The blue & gold held a decisive 58 to 39 advantage on the boards.
The Sound was led by Stu Warren. Warren was 9 for 19 from the field and 10 for 14 from the foul line for a game high 31 points. Tylric Peoples connected on four 3-pointers and added 21 points. Five Towns shot 43.4% from the field, connected on ten 3-pointers, and shot 73.5% from the foul line. The Sound were slowed down by 23 turnovers.
The Pioneers have a few days off before returning home on Wednesday afternoon to battle Wells College. The Pioneers and Express tip-off at 1 p.m.
