Cold Shooting Haunts Pioneers

After a fast start, the Alfred State men's basketball team struggled shooting as SUNY ESF rallied for a 65-52 victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers jumped out quickly and grabbed a 19-4 lead in the first nine minutes of the game. The Mighty Oaks fought back the rest of the half and trailed only by five, 28-23, at half. Ryan Caldwell hit a foul shot with 7:38 remaining to give the Oaks 45-44 lead. From that point on the Oaks finished the game on a 20 to 8 run to earn the victory.

Marquis Edwards (Queens/In-Tech Academy) led the Pioneers with 14 points while Juwan Toliver (Buffalo/McKinley) chipped in 11. Marcus Rhett (Middletown) added nine points and Tyler Elliott (Perry) chipped in eight points and eight boards.

The Pioneers shot just 31.9% from the field and 10.7% (3 of 28) from three, and 33.3% (3 of 9) from the foul line.

Ryan Caldwell led ESF with 14 points and seven boards while Dan Treadwell finished with 11 and Jared Bard chipped in 10. The Mighty Oaks shot 40.7% from the field, 31.6% (6 of 19) from three, and 68.2% (15 of 22) from the foul line. ESF also held the slight 46 to 44 rebounding advantage.

The Pioneers hit the road on Tuesday when they travel to Johnson City for a contest vs. Davis College.
