Softball Closes out Season

The Alfred State softball team fell 6-2 and 12-3 to Hilbert on Friday afternoon as the Lady Pioneers closed out the 2016 season. Wet and chilly conditions at Pioneer Park led to sloppy play.

In the opener, Hilbert grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 2nd before the Lady Pioneers answered back with a RBI ground out by Samantha Mawn (Fillmore). The Hawks plated two more in the 4th and added single runs in the 6th and 7th. Stormi Kruger (Medina) had a RBI ground out in the 7th but the blue & gold were unable to get any closer. The Pioneers couldn't relish on numerous scoring opportunities and left nine runners on base in the contest.

Claire Hartman (Alden) was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 4.

Hilbert scored a pair of runs in the 1st and 3rd innings in the nightcap to grab a 4-0 lead. In the 3rd, Allison Gibson (Arkport) scored a wild pitch and Amanda Rockefeller (Bolivar Richburg) drove home Kruger with a RBI ground out.

As the precipitation fell more consistently, the Hawks put the game out of reach with seven runs in the 4th and added another run 5th. Kruger scored for the Lady Pioneers in the bottom of the 5th when she laced a triple and scored on an error.

Kruger finished 2 for 2 in the nightcap for Alfred State.

In between games the Lady Pioneers honored their four graduating student-athletes. Katie Jackson (Troy, PA) and Hartman were honored for their four years of play, Rockefeller for three years, and Mawn for two. All four are slated to graduate in a couple weeks.
