Miscues Prove Costly in Baseball Opener

The Alfred State baseball team could not overcome their miscues in a 12-3 loss at Apprentice on Saturday morning to open up their 2014 campaign.  The Pioneers were slowed down by seven walks, five hit batsmen, and five errors.

After the Builders scored three in the 1st, Alfred State cut the lead to 3-2 in the 2nd behind a RBI groundout by Jordyn Confer (Williamson, PA/Tioga) and a throwing error.  Apprentice scored four in the 3rd and two more in the 4th to take control of the contest, 9-2.  Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) singled home Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) in the 8th to account for the Pioneers other tally.

Franz was the lone Pioneers with multiple hits finishing 3 for 4 with a RBI.  Wheaton, Tom Banicky (Orson/Hancock), and Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia) all finished 1 for 4 with a double.

Brian Blevins was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI while Brock Harris was 2 for 5 with a RBI for the 8-3 Builders.

Alfred State and Apprentice continue their three-game series on Sunday when they play a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. in Newport News, VA.
