Offensive Explosion Leads Pioneers Past Houghton

The Alfred State baseball team scored a season high 19 runs in a 19-3 victory at Houghton College on Thursday.  The Pioneers collected three doubles, two triples, and two homers in the victory.

The Pioneers trailed 2-1 until scoring five runs in the 3rd inning.  They put the game out of reach in the 4th inning with 10 batters.

Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia), Nick Smith (Arkport), and Anthony Gonzalez (Florida/SS Seward) had RBI in the 3rd inning.  In the 4th, Hierlwimmer had a three RBI triple, Jordyn Confer (Williamson/Tioga) had a RBI double, Gonzalez hit a grand slam, and Wheaton capped the 10 run inning with a two run shot.  The homers were the first for Gonzalez and Wheaton on the season and the first for the Pioneers on the year.

The Pioneers scored single runs in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings to add to their lead.

Zach Jackson (Churchville Chili) came out of the bullpen and tossed six innings of three hit ball to earn his first collegiate victory.  He walked one and struck out four batters.

Wheaton led the Pioneers 18 hit attack with a 4 for 6, 4 RBI day.  Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) was 3 for 5 with a RBI, Hierlwimmer was 2 for 5 with 4 RBI, Confer was 3 for 5 with a RBI, and Gonzalez was 1 for 4 with 5 RBI.  Austin Baker (Canisteo Greenwood) was 3 for 6.

The Pioneers are slated to play their first on campus games of the year tomorrow as they begin a four-game series vs. SUNY Canton.  Opening pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.
