Pioneers and Continentals Split

Alfred State and Hamilton College split a pair on Thursday afternoon at the RussMatt Invitational. The Continentals won the opener 8-7 while the Pioneers earned their first win of the season 5-2 in the nightcap.

In the Pioneers game two victory, Ryan Hedges (Arkport) tossed a complete game five hitter to earn his first collegiate win.  He allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out three.

Hamilton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd but the Pioneers cut the lead in half in the 2nd and took the lead in the 3rd.  In the 3rd, Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) and Jordyn Confer (Williamson) collected RBI singles to give the blue & gold a 3-2 lead.  Stephen Golembiewski (Cattaraugus) added two insurance runs in the 5th when he plated two runs with a pinch hit double.

Wheaton finished the day 3 for 4 while Confer was 2 for 3.

In a back and forth opener, Hamilton scored four runs in the bottom of the 5th to take control of the contest.  Wheaton and Confer were both 2 for 4 with 2 RBI while Matthew Nawrot (Clarence) was 1 for 4 with a RBI.

The Pioneers close out their Florida trip on Friday with a 3 p.m. contest vs. Babson (MA).
