Hedges Tosses Shutout, Pioneers Split with Roos

Ryan Hedges (Arkport) tossed a complete game five-hit shutout in a Alfred State 1-0 game one victory over SUNY Canton on Saturday afternoon.  The Kangaroos bounced back in the nightcap for a 13-3 victory to split the doubleheader and the four-game weekend series.

Hedges scattered five singles and stranded six Kangaroos on the base paths to improve to 2-4 on the season.  He walked two and struck out eight batters.

The lone run of the game came in the 1st inning.  Matthew Nawrot (Clarence) doubled to open up the game and went to 3rd on a bunt single by Austin Baker (Canisteo Greenwood).  Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) plated Nawrot with a sac fly to left field.

Canton starter Derek Harkin allowed just four hits and the one run in six innings of work.  He didn't walk a batter and struck out three.  Kyle Sacks accounted for three of the Roos hits finishing 3 for 3.

In the nightcap, Canton scored five runs in the 1st inning and never looked back.  The Pioneers stole a run in the 1st on a double steal by Baker and Wheaton.  Wheaton made it 5-3 in the 3rd with a double down the line but Canton plated four runs in the 5th and four more in the 7th to put the game away.

The Pioneers were held to just three hits by Travis Bigelow. Bigelow allowed two earned runs while walking one and striking out seven.  Austin Hernandez was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI and Jesse Barton was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI.

The blue & gold continue their homestand on Tuesday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader vs. Houghton College.
