WV Tech Rallies for One Run Victories

The Alfred State baseball team suffered a pair of one run defeats as West Virginia Tech rallied in both games to earn the the sweep.  The Golden Bears scored five runs in the 6th in the opener and scored two in the 7th in game two to earn the walkoff victory.

Trailing 4-1 after three innings, the Pioneers plated five runs in the 4th inning to grab the lead. Matthew Nawrot (Clarence) keyed the inning with a two run double.  WV Tech plated a run in the 4th but Alfred State added three runs on RBI singles by Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia), Dylan Lewis-Ellison (Whitesville), and Tom Banicky (Orson/Hancock) to make it 9-5.

The Golden Bears rallied for the victory with five runs in the bottom of the 6th behind four hits and three walks.  The Pioneers went in order in the 7th to end the contest.

Nawrot led the Pioneers with a 3 for 5, 2 RBI day.  He collected a single a double, and a triple. Hierlwimmer, Jordyn Confer (Williamson, PA/Tioga), and Banicky were each 2 for 3.

The Golden Bears jumped out to a 10-0 lead after three innings of the nightcap before the Pioneers started their rally.  Alfred plated three runs in the 4th on a RBI HBP of Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) and RBI groundouts by Hierlwimmer and Lewis-Ellison.

WV Tech added two in the bottom of the 4th but the Pioneers scored two in the 5th on a Confer RBI and a Franz RBI double.  Two walks and a hit batsmen loaded the bases in the 6th for Alfred.  A sac fly by Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton), a RBI single by Confer, and a bases clearing triple by Hierlwimmer cut the Golden Bear lead to 12-10.

In the 7th, the Pioneers scored a run on a wild pitch and tied it up on a RBI single by Michael Durkin (Jeffersonville, NY / Sullivan West).  Confer gave Alfred a lead with a sac fly two batters later.

The Golden Bears collected a single and walk and had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out when Trevor Lam singled to center to plate both runs to end the game.

Durkin and Wheaton were both 2 for 3 on the day while Hierlwimmer drove in four runs and Confer three.

The Pioneers and Bears conclude their three-game set on Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. contest.
