Big Late Innings Lift Builders

Big Late Innings Lift Builders

The Apprentice School used big innings late in each game to sweep a doubleheader from Alfred State on Sunday afternoon.  The Builders won 11-2 in the opener and 8-5 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Apprentice broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the 4th on a two-out bunt single.  The Builders added two run in the 5th and took advantage of three Pioneer errors in the 6th to plate six runs and put the game out of reach.

Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 3 for 4. Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) had a RBI single in the 1st inning and Nick Smith (Arkport) drove home a run in the 2nd on a fielders choice.  Ryan Hedges (Arkport) allowed three earned runs in 4.1 innings of work in his collegiate debut.  He allowed six hits, walked four, and struck out two.

The top three batters in the Apprentice order provided most of the damage for the Builders. Trevor Wilson was 3 for 3, Brock Harris was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, and Chris Aldridge was 2 for 4. Taylor Gomer didn't allow an earned run in six innings of work to earn the victory.

In the nightcap, Michael Durkin (Jeffersonville/Sullivan West) was hit by a pitch in the 4th inning with the bases loaded to erase the Builders 1-0 lead.  Wheaton followed one batter later with a bases clearing triple and came around to score on a single by Franz to give the Pioneers a 5-1 lead.

Apprentice cut into the lead with a run in the 4th and two in the 5th.  Aldridge capped the rally in the 6th when he hit a bases loaded two-out triple to give the Builders a 7-4 lead.  He scored one batter later on a RBI single by Brian Belvin.

Aldridge finished the day 3 for 4 with 4 RBI while Belvin was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI.   In the deciding 5th and 6th inning, Apprentice drew five walks.  Sam Massie kept the Builders in the game with 3.1 innings of one hit ball.  He walked none and struck out seven.

Wheaton led the Pioneers with a 2 for 4, 3 RBI day while Brady Sass (Caledonia Mumford) tossed the first five innings and didn't factor in the decision.  He allowed five hits, three earned runs, and walked three.

The blue & gold return to action next weekend when they travel to West Virginia Tech for a three-game series.
