Pioneers Fall in Two Tight Battles

Pioneers Fall in Two Tight Battles

The Alfred State baseball team saw Brock University rally for a 7-4 victory in the opener and then win a 7-6 nine inning decision in the nightcap.

Alfred State led 3-1 heading into the 6th before the Badgers rallied.  The Pioneers got RBI singles by Anthony Gonzalez (Florida/SS Seward) and Matthew Nawrot (Clarence) along with a RBI hit by pitch by Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) in their three-run 4th inning.  Brock scored two in the 6th to tie and added four in the 7th to take the lead.

Nawrot led the Pioneers with a 2 for 4 day with a RBI while Jordyn Confer (Williamson/Tioga) was 2 for 4.  Vincent McDaniel (Arkport) allowed just three hits in 5.1 innings of work but didn't factor in the decision.  He allowed two earned runs while walking four and striking out three.

In the nightcap the Pioneers scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th to send the game into extra innings.  Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia) connected on a one-out game-tying double but was stranded on third as the Badgers recorded the final two outs of the inning.

Brock scored the winning run in the top of the 9th on a sac fly and were able to withstand a 1st and 2nd one-out situation in the bottom of the inning to ensure the win.

Hierlwimmer was 2 for 4 with a RBI while Confer was 2 for 5.

The blue & gold return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Monroe CC for a 11 a.m. doubleheader vs. the Tribunes.
