Covington Hits Winner in OT

Helena Covington (Elmira Free) hit a jump shot with six seconds left in overtime to lift the Alfred State women's basketball team to a 74-73 victory over Erie CC.  The win evens the Lady Pioneers record at 10-10.

The contest featured 11 lead changes and seven ties.  The Pioneers led 35-29 at half and led by as many as nine with just under nine minutes remaining in the game.  The Kats clawed back in the game and the contest was tied at 63 in the closing seconds.  Both teams were called for offensive charges in the final minute sending the contest into the extra frame.

In OT, both teams traded baskets with Alfred gaining the ball with just over 30 seconds tied at 72-72.  The Pioneers moved the ball around when Covington got the ball and hit a 10 footer to give the Pioneers lead with six seconds remaining.  The Kats tried to push ball up the court and Alfred was called for a foul with 0.7 seconds remaining.  Erie hit the first but the second shot bounced out to give Alfred the win.

Briana Meehan (Whitesville) led hte way for the blue & gold with 16 points whiel Jennifer Fedrick (Buffalo/Bennett) finished with 15 points and 12 boards.  Marcedes Caver (Cleveland, OH) chipped in 14 points and 11 boards while Covington added 12 points.  Jackie Lieb (Hornell) was clutch in the 2nd half dropping eight points and grabbing five boards.  Destiny Brito (Manhattan/Park West) finished with seven points, eight rebounds, and six assists.

Crystal Marion led the Lady Kats with 22 points and 13 boards.  Aaliyah Dunbar finished with 21 points and Jazzae Verse added 11.

Alfred State shot 34.6% from the field and hit 4 of 14 three-point attempts.  The Lady Pioneers held a 59 to 48 advantage on the boards.  Erie shot 31.5% from the field but was only 3 for 27 from three.  The Kats shot 82.8% (24 for 29) from the foul line.

The Lady Pioneers close out the regular season tomorrow when they host SUNY Canton at 3 p.m.
