Big Second Half Lifts Lady Pioneers Past Canton

The Alfred State women's basketball team began the 2nd half on a 20-2 run and outscored the SUNY Canton 42-19 in the half en route to a 75-55 victory to close out the home portion of the season. The Lady Pioneers, ranked #4 in the USCAA, improve to 17-6 on the season.

After a sluggish 1st half, trailed 36-33 at half, the Lady Pioneers turned it on and held the Kangaroos without a basket for nearly the first nine minutes of the 2nd half to take control of the game.

Haley Witchella (Oxford) led the way for the blue & gold with 20 points and 18 boards while Briana Meehan (Whitesville) finished with 11 points. Destiny Brito (Manhattan/Park West) had a solid all-around game with nine points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, and seven steals. Helena Covington (Elmira Free) and Hannah Carlson (Lynbrook) each chipped in eight.

Taylor Saltus led all scorers with 23 points for Canton. Karyss Terrance finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds, Brianna Sayer had nine points, and Tatiana Laroche chipped in eight points and 14 rebounds. The Kangaroos finish the season with a 7-15 record.

Prior to the game, the coaching staff honored Witchella, Meehan, Brito, Covington, Megan Bailey (West Valley), and Jennifer Fedrick (Buffalo/Bennett). All six were playing their final home game in a Pioneer uniform.

The Lady Pioneers wrap up the regular season on Tuesday when they travel to Davis College for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
