Cross Country: 4th at Houghton

Both the men's and women's cross country teams raced to 4th place finishes at the Houghton College Highlander Short Course Twilight Invitational. Alfred State was one of seven teams that competed in the season opening event.

Shawn Rutledge (Watkins Glen) led the men's team with a 31st place finish. He crossed the finish line of the 5k course in 17:12.6 (5:33 per mile). Julia Russell (Candor) was the top female finisher of the 4k course finished 19th. She crossed the finish line in 16:15.7 (6:33 per mile).

The men scored a 121 in the event while the women scored 134.

Football: 0-1

UMass Dartmouth put together five scoring drives in the 1st half as they defeated Alfred State 49-21 in the season opener for both teams. The Pioneers got the offense going late in the contest scoring 21 of the final 28 points of the game.

Alfred State scored three times in the final 18:04 of the game. Ronnie Clark (Philadelphia/Indian River) broke numerous tackles as he scored from 24-yards out to get the Pioneers on the board with 3:04 remaining in the 3rd quarter. After Dartmouth scored for the final time, Dashown Wilson (Bronx/DeWitt Clinton) connected on a pair of scoring passes in the 4th quarter. With 5:13 left he connected with Jalen Long (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) on a 32-yard pass play and with 20 seconds left he threw a deep 46-yard touchdown to Ricky Hagins (Eastridge). Wilson finished the day 16 for 32 for 299 yards and two scores while Long caught nine passes for 173 yards and a score. Clark carried the ball 17 times for 50 yards.

Michael Zimmerman (Canandaigua) led the defense with 10 tackles while John Lauretti (Seaford) finished with eight tackles (one sack and three for a loss). 

Men's Soccer: 0-2

The Pioneers were tripped up in both of their contests this week. They fell 2-0 in their home opener vs. Ithaca and lost a 6-3 battle at SUNY Delhi.

Ithaca scored a goal in each half on Friday evening. Pioneer freshmen goalkeeper Nico Coria (Honeoye Falls) made seven saves in his collegiate debut in net.

Albert Senyah (Long Island/Central Islip) scored a pair of goals at Delhi on Sunday but the Pioneers couldn't overcome the Broncos offense. Justus Hoffmann (Hamburg) and Nathan Adamec (Lancaster) collected assists.

Women's Soccer: 0-1-1

The women's soccer team battled to a scoreless tie vs. Elmira in their home opener and then couldn't come all the way back in a 3-2 loss at SUNY Delhi.

Alfred State finished with a 12 to 7 shot advantage in the game while Elmira took 9 corner kicks compared to the Pioneers 7. Madison Papaj (Holley) made three saves to record the shutout in her collegiate contest in net.

The Pioneers fell behind 3-0 in the 1st at Delhi but had a solid 2nd half but couldn't climb all the way back. Melissa Mineti (Livonia) scored in the 73rd minute after getting a pass from Jessica Williams (Belfast) and Maggie Meyer (Red Creek) scored with 12 seconds remaining in the game.

Volleyball: 2-0

The Pioneers earned victories in their first two matches of the season. They swept Cazenovia 25-16, 25-19, 25-9 and then defeated Maine Fort Kent 17-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-20.

Madison Webster (Corning) had a big week as she led the team with 31 kills and 26 digs. Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) chipped in 26 kills and 15 digs, Sarah Raichlin (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) passed out 75 assists, and Jordan Stauffeneker (Lansing) had 25 digs.
