Late Surge Comes Up Just Short

The Alfred State baseball team fell 6-3 to Southern Vermont on Wednesday morning as they continued their spring training trip in Auburndale, FL. The Pioneers had the tying runs on base in the 9th when the Mountaineers recorded the final out.

The Mountaineers got on the board first in the 3rd inning but the Pioneers came right back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Jordan Wheaton (Wayland-Cohocton) hit a sac fly to score Dylan Lewis-Ellison (Whitesville).

Southern Vermont made it 3-1 with single runs in the 4th and 5th innings. Jose Martinez (Queens/Newtown) made it 3-2 in the 6th with RBI single but the Mountaineers secured the victory with three runs in the 7th.

The Pioneers had a chance in the 9th as they pushed a run across on a RBI infield single by Wheaton. Southern Vermont reliever Joshua Hay recorded the final out with Pioneers standing on all three bases.

RJ Pingitore, Cody Labadia, and Richard Rios provided timely hitting and combined for five RBI for the Moutaineers.

The Pioneers provided hits up and down the lineup, but couldn't tally many together to squeeze across some more runs. Martinez, Wheaton, and Chris Borden (Scotia-Glenville) each tallied two hits in the contest.

Rafael Perozo (Bronx) struck out three in the loss. Allowing only two hits and four walks. Matthew Nawrot (Clarence) gave the Pioneers two strong innings, strinking out one and allowing only 2 hits.

The Pioneers will be back in action Thursday (3/18) when they take on Hamilton in a DH. Games are slated to begin at 9:30 a.m.
