Pioneers and Hawks Split

Pioneers and Hawks Split

Alfred State and Hilbert split a pair of one-run contests on Sunday afternoon at McGraw Jennings Field on the campus of St. Bonaventure. The Pioneers won the opener 7-6 and the Hawks rallied to take the nightcap 5-4.

In a back and forth opener, the Pioneers used a three run 5th inning to take the lead for good. The blue & gold grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 1st when Dylan Lewis-Ellison (Whitesville) connected a two out 2-RBI double. Hilbert took a 3-2 lead in the 2nd but the Pioneers answered with two of their own in the 3rd keyed by a RBI single by Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia).

The Hawks took the lead again in the bottom of the 4th with three more runs, two of the runs came following a Pioneer error. Once again Alfred State rallied with a three-run 5th. Chris Borden (Scotia-Glenville) had a RBI double and Michael English (Livonia) delivered a 2-RBI pinch hit single to give the Pioneers the lead for good.

Hilbert put two runners on in the 7th but Austin Baker (Canisteoo Greenwood) got the final two outs to earn the save and secure the victory.

English finished 2 for 2 with 2 RBI while Hierlwimmer and Bordenn were each 2 for 4 with a RBI. Matthew Nawrot (Clarence) earned the win with 2.1 inning of two hit relief. Baker struck out two in his one inning of work (Baker recorded the final out in the 4th inning and then came out of left field to record the final two outs of the game).

Daniel Christman led Hilbert with a 3 for 5, 2 RBI day while Mark Anderson was 2 for 2 with a RBI.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 2nd. Lewis-Ellison hit a RBI triple, Jordyn Confer (Tioga, PA) followed with a RBI single, and Pedro Mora (Manhattan/AP Randolph) connected on a 2-RBI triple.

Hilbert threatened numerous times but could not get anything on the board until the 5th inning. The Hawks scored three in the 5th and then scored two in the 6th to grab the lead. Ryan Bonafede hit the game winning sac fly to left.

The Pioneers put runners on 1st and 2nd in the top of the 7th but could not plate the tying run.

Alfred State was held to just five hits in the contest while Hilbert collected 12 led by Paul Wujek's 3 for 3 day.

Alfred State is back in action on Tuesday when they host D'Youville for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
