Greater Allegheny Takes Two from Pioneers

Alfred State battled Penn State Greater Allegheny tough but was unable to earn a victory, falling 5-1 and 7-6 to the 4th ranked team in the USCAA. The Lions got a quick start in game one and then needed two runs in the 7th to win the nightcap.

In the opener, Greater Allegheny scored three runs in the 1st and then added single runs in the 3rd and 5th innings to hold a 5-0 lead. The Pioneers scored their lone run of the contest in the 6th when Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) connected on a RBI double.

The Lions 3-4-5 hitters, Troy Ambros, Gianmarco Concepcion, and Joshua Arroyo, finished the day 6 for 8 with 3 RBI. Nicholas Padley (Sweet Home) was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 3 with a double.

Greater Allegheny jumped out to a early 2-0 lead in the nightcap before the Pioneers scored the games next six runs. Padley and Jose Martinez (Queens/Newtown) hit back to back doubles to drive in runs and tie the game in the 4th. In the 5th, Rafael Perozo (Bronx/St. Raymond) connected on a grand slam to give the blue & gold their first lead.

The Lions (10-4) rallied for three runs in the 5th and then took advantage of two errors in the 7th to walk off with the tying and winning runs.

Martinez was 2 for 4 for the Pioneers while Ambros finished 3 for 4 with 2 RBI for the Lions.

The blue and gold are scheduled to head to Pitt-Bradford on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. contest with the Panthers.
