Alfred State and D'Youville Battle to a Split

Alfred State and D'Youville split a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon as the Pioneers won the opener 10-4 and the Spartans took the nightcap 16-8. The contests were the first home games played on campus this season.

In the opener, the Pioneers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead with two runs in 1st and two more in the 2nd. Jose Martinez (Queens/Newtown) delivered the two RBI double in the 1st while Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) had a RBI single in the 2nd.

The Spartans cut the lead to 4-2 with single runs in the 4th and 5th innings before Alfred State put the game out of reach with six runs in the 6th. Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) delivered a two-run single in the inning which also featured three walks and an error.

Wheaton finished 2 for 3 with 2 RBI while Martinez and Franz both drove in two. Brady Sass (Caledonia Mumford) earned the victory on the hill with six innings of six hit ball. He allowed just one earned run while walking and striking out three.

D'Youville scored seven runs in the 5th to take control of a close contest in the nightcap. The Spartans led 8-2 after an inning and a half before the Pioneers chipped away and made it 8-7 heading into the 5th. In the deciding 5th, D'Youville sent 13 batters to the plate, collected five hits, three walks, and took advantage of one costly error.

Chris Feril led the Spartans on the mound and at the plate. He earned the win with 3.2 innings of relief work in which he allowed just one earned run. He was also 3 for 3 with 2 RBI at the plate. Eric Simoncelli was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI. D'Youville collected 12 hits, drew ten walks, and took advantage of four Pioneer errors.

Five of the Pioneers six hits were extra base hits. Pedro Mora (Manhattan/AP Randolph) drove in two with a double. Alfred State drew nine walks but stranded nine runners.

The Pioneers were slated to play at Houghton on Wednesday evening but that contest has been moved to 4/21 and will be part of a DH at Alfred. 

Alfred St. will be back in action on Saturday when they begin a three-game series with SUNY Canton. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
