Pioneers Drop Tight Contest vs. Canton

Brandon Welch collected a game winning bunt single in the 8th inning to lift SUNY Canton to a 4-3 victory over Alfred State as the two teams completed a three-game weekend series. The Pioneers took two out of three in Canton over the weekend and won the season series 4-3.

Andrew Weigman (Genesee Valley) got the Pioneers on the board with a RBI ground out in the 2nd. Canton tied it up in the 2nd and took a lead with another run in the 3rd. Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) tied it up in the 4th with a RBI single and Chris Borden (Scotia-Glenville) connected on a two-out double in the 5th to give Alfred State back the lead.

Canton took advantage of a throwing error in the 5th to tie it up. Welch delivered the game-winning bunt single after back-to-back singles to lead off the 8th inning. The Pioneers had the tying run on base in the 9th but could not plate the tying run.

Borden finished 2 for 4 with a RBI, Nicholas Padley (Sweet Home) was 2 for 4, and Franz was 2 for 5 with a RBI. Connor Odonoghue (Avon) pitched 7.1 innings allowing nine hits and three earned runs. He walked three and struck out two.

Keenan Shannon was 3 for 4 to lead the Kangaroos while Welch was 2 for 3 with a RBI. John Mancini pitched a scoreless 8th to earn the win while Robbie Osterer got the final three outs for the save.

The blue & gold return to action on Tuesday when they host Pitt-Bradford at 3:30 p.m. for a single 9-inning contest.
