Pioneers Sweep Elmira

The Alfred State baseball team swept a pair from Elmira, 4-2 and 6-4, at Dunn Field on Thursday afternoon.

In the opener the Pioneers used a four-run 4th inning and a solid pitching performance from Jake Remington (Letchworth) to earn the victory. In the decisive 4th, Michael English (Livonia) and Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) connected on RBI singles while Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) delivered a two-RBI single.

Remington allowed nine hits and an earned run in seven innings of work. He walked one and struck out three to earn his second win of the year. Chris Borden (Scotia-Glenville) was 2 for 3 while Franz and Wheaton were each 2 for 4.

Rafael Perozo (Bronx/St. Raymond) delivered a two-out double in the top of the 7th to break a 4-4 tie as the Pioneers finished the sweep. Austin Baker (Canisteo Greenwood) came around to score an insurance run on a throwing error by the catcher.

Nicholas Padley (Sweet Home) got the Pioneers on the board in the 1st when he singled home two runs. Elmira rallied right back with two of their own runs in the bottom half of the inning. Nick Smith (Arkport) executed a squeeze and English scored on a error to give the Pioneers their two run lead back. Elmira tied it up again with two runs in the 5th.

Franz was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 4. Conner Odonoghue (Avon) pitched 6.2 innings of relief to earn the victory. He allowed eight hits, two earned runs, and a walk while striking out four.

The Pioneers (4-14) are slated to play a doubleheader vs. Penn State Greater Allegheny on Saturday at Pullman Park in Butler, PA. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m.
